Self Portrait with Wife and Models
A rare pre-1985 original vintage print produced in limited numbers from a series of transparencies that Newton considered his most provocative and important work through 1985.
Description
Self Portrait with Wife and Models features June Newton, Helmut Newton and Sylvia Gobbel.
The shoot was about trench coats for French Vouge Homme. Helmut told the editor “You know I don’t like to shoot male models. Male models are just like an accessory for me, like shoes, hat or belt. I never will shoot men as I shoot women.”
Newton’s idea was to shoot Sylvia Gobbel naked in front of a mirror and wear the trench coat himself. June Newton was not supposed to be in the picture but she arrived early for lunch and so Helmut had June sat down beside the mirror.
The point of my photography has always been to challenge myself, to go a little further than my Germanic discipline and Teutonic nature would traditionally permit me to.
